What is an effective way to improve logic & reasoning?
I believe I have common sense but I've read books like Freakonomics and now More Sex is Safer Sex and there are sooo many situations that, if presented without explanations, seem impossible...such as having more sex can in fact be safer for society. Then when the author shows 10 different angles you clearly see the picture and why/how it can be. Are there exercises to improve logic so I can foresee possibilities and not wait for someone to explain to me?
Answer:
read up the basic laws of logics, such as fallacies, paradigm shift, syllogisms, false dilemma, paradox, critical thinking. if you would read up my past questions, i've been asking questions on these issues, and some answers really get people thinking.
some books im going to get in the library later on:
1 Critical Thinking for Students
2 Art of Deception : introduction to Critical Thinking
3The geography of Thought
4 Argument: Critical Thinking, Logic, and the Fallacies
5 Paradoxical thinking: how to profit from your contradictions
6 Future edge: discovering paradigms
im telling you to get these books because i feel that you're looking for the same thing as i am, so i would recommend reading and making book summary, while consciously looking to apply revelant principles in your daily life.
when in comes to life there are only three kinds of people, those who live their live "their way", those who live their life for others, and those who live their life while being "dead"..now all those 'self-help' books might give you prospective to improve your life, but FOR ME life isn't really about knowing the answers but rather the process of coming to my own conclusions, and better understanding..after all life isn't meant to be experienced through books but rather through LIVING IT !
It is so simple, think, and think and think, reason keep on reasoning, be reasonable, be logical, defend, explain, define, learn, generate ideas, acquire knowledge, be moral and rational, these are just continued processes and until such time you will attain wisdom, that can be used for the greater good of yourself and of the human kind.
Reading, studying, learning and thinking, as well as mental exercises that require you to think "outside the box".
Our logic and reasoning can atrophy if we fail to make use of them. But the contrary is also true - the more you use your brain, the more it will improve.
Don't be satisfied with commonly accepted ideas and answers. Ask "why". Study issues in-depth and find out what lies behind the concepts.
This is a lifelong process...
