The Human Development Index is Puzling?
How can Australia consistently rank as one of the 3 most liveable countries in the world, when we have after the Italy,Ireland, The USA and the UK , the fifth highest levels of per capita poverty in the developed world (population living on $11 or less a day!). Is it just me or is something wrong with their methodology?
Answer:
Australia has high per-capita income despite some poverty, and the mean not the median is used in the HDI. Australia is well-educated, and this helps as well. Life expectancy is also a large part of it, and I suppose Australia is fine in that area.
You should look up the methodology the used to compile the HDI. That would give you more ability to understand or criticize.
