Why do we adjust for degrees of freedom when computing MU for a population?

Answer:
Simple. If the population mean cannot be known completely the adjusting for the number of degrees of freedom gives us a better estimate as to the variation. The more drgrees of freedom the less precise our estimate can be. So when looking at the population parameters which are KOTG (known only to God) it is useful to know how close you can come to the actual value, this is done by adjusting for the variablity or degrees of freedom. Hope this helps.
