Population control works?

In China the one child policy has resulted in a slowdown in population growth. Their economy has mushroomed and people, particularly in the eastern seaboard cities have a healthier, longer life span.

Answer:
The reason population control works in China is because people there live in fear of an oppressive regime. Having one child means that they are given benefits such as a job in a state owned company, their child has access to state education and they can get a job. There is however no western country in which the fear of oppression would result in successful population control because of the public outrage it would lead to.

Instead a more pro-active stance such as distributing free condoms (not sex- ed classes as many would advocate) is much more likely to succeed in a more western society though its the developing world that suffers from extreme population growth. If anything the developed world suffers from a constantly ageing population.
mexico could use some of it.
well, people are leaving and having kids. or they pay some much money and end up having the kids. there is putting the kid to adobtion. see how they can get away with the law.
Yes, then the population pyramid will be less bottom heavy (children), who don't work anyway and only need time. In long term this may cause a top heavy population (many elder), but this is not the concern for now :P
