In very simple terms, it has meant that Americans with jobs can buy food & merchandise much more cheaply than before. Unfortunately, countless american businesses & industries are closing down & forcing employees out of good paying jobs or to work at low paying local jobs (fast food, etc.). If you don't have a job or you're working in fast food, cheaper products are no bargain.
If you are a qualified person working a high tech job, you're probably all right.
But if you're only high school or less, you're in trouble.

It's reported that the average american pay (in terms of what he can buy) is 25% less than what his father made 20 years ago.
