Does the existence of poverty imply that our socio economic system is unjust?
Answer:
The existance of poverty implies to me:
1) that some portions of the social structure are trapped in their base socio-economic roots
2) that some portions of society are not motivated to achieve to the same levels as other portions of society
3) that societies expectations of economic productivity are not the same across the board
4) that environment teaches lifestyle
5) education is usually tied directly to motivation to change or better a lifestyle
As far as unjust, based on what, the attitude of entitlement? If poverty were unjust, dont you wonder if people would change their lifestyles? Who is supposed to determine the standards of living that decide exactly what poverty is? What makes them experts in poverty?
NO . I have only 5 million dollars and SO I am poorer than many many others. You have 1 MILLION dollars and SO you are richer than millions of people.
SEE THE FORTUNE MAGAZINES and find everyone lamenting that they are poor and resolving to become richer atleast next year, SEE THE DEVELOPMENT magazines and journals of the nations of the world and united nations and you will find the same thing.
So being poor in USA is most likely not the same thing as being poor in SOMALIA.
So the existence of poverty does not imply that the socio economic system is unjust , it only means that the Share and Enjoy system is imperfect.
I think it was flawed at conception (lack of foresight which is absolutely understandable as none can predict the future) but the refusal to go back to the drawing board makes it unjust. I think we should allow for change/ adaptation to keep up with the times baring in mind that the earths dynamics change either due to human evolution/ movement or natural causes.
