Do you think capitalism caused the downfall of this country?

The greed of a few, destroys the lives of so many.

So many suffer, so that a few will profit.

Answer:
Very thought provoking question and some very good answers. I don't think it's capitalism in and of itself but the nasty way it's used as a corruption of power.
the down fall of this country has nothing to do with greed, it has to do with the government telling parents how to raise there kids and parents being afraid to discipline them, there are no morals left and it is geting worse every year
What downfall? Morally speaking?? YES. But that would be the federal reserves fault.

The fed, the illegal fed.
it is not because of capitalism, although one could make the argument, that it is part of the puzzel. You can't point the finger at one thing for the faults of our nation. Yes, greed and power lead to curruption...but u can look at someone like Bill Gates who dropped out of school, and took advantage of capitalism to become who is today, and yes, he likes to make money and has cornered the market, but he is not a bad person...he gives houndreds of millions to help the needy. If more of the wealthiest 1% had his view it wouldn't be such a problem. However if you had to pick one major reason for the downfall of this country it would be the curruption of governemt (which is very differnt from out capitalist market)
No, some of those people with so much greed are the heads of major companies that employ millions of people. Lives are destroyed by people who do not believe in taking responsibility for their own actions, or who don't care about anyone but themselves.
I don't see too much of a downfall. The unemployment rate is lower than ever, inflation and interest rates are the lowest since WWII. Poverty is almost non-existent in the U.S.

Take a look at Africa, if you want to see people doing poorly.
No rampant socialism causes our problems, it is when people bribe officials to get special favors that we lose. And that is not capitalism
1 Timothy 6 : 3 - 11 ... if any man teach otherwise , and consent not to wholesome words , even the wholesome words of our Lord Jesus Christ , and to the doctrine which is according to Godliness.. He is proud , knowing nothing , but doting about questions and strifes` of words , whereof cometh envy , strife , railings , evil surmisings .. Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds , and destitute of the truth , supposing that gain is godliness : from such withdraw thyself ... But Godliness with contentment is great gain ... For we brought nothing into this world , and it is certain we can carry nothing out ...And having food and raiment let us be therewith be content ... But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare , and into many foolish and hurtful lust , which drown men in destruction and perdition ... . For " THE "LOVE" OF MONEY " is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after , they have erred from the faith , and pierced themselves through with many arrows` .. King James Holy Bible !!
First of all, please define our "downfall". What/who causes you to have opinion, because I don't think we're anywhere near that state. Who are the greedy few? And whose lives are destroyed?? I'm profiting through capitalism because I work hard in my job. Why do you think so many want to come to this country? It's because they see the chance to make their lives better. Everyone has that chance, but it's not given to them . They work! If there are, in fact, those who are suffering, their lives "destroyed", they need to look no farther than their own mirror. And, by looking in that same mirror, they can see who can help them.
Capitalism is the base of our successful society. What would you suggest to replace it?
People outside of the US pulling President Bush's Strings.
Little Corporate Ethics.
Breakdown of the Nuclear Family.
People living over their means----always trying to keep up with the "Jones."
Easy Credit.
Outsourcing.
Entire US Government losing touch with voters.
