What are Three reasons people oppose to the North American Trade Agreement?
How did you find the reponses and what references could be used to make a 200 to 300 word report on it. Please help I am not having a good experience with economics. Thanks
Answer:
1) U.S. imports mainly come from Japan.
2) Mexico has very low economy.
3) Canada's exports are very expensive.
the trade agreement is not equal many us based business cannot compete with Mexico's slave labor
it favors Mexico and actually hurts Mexico in ways such as Mexican farm workers now come here to work because their farm industry hires cheaper labor from less advantaged countries
it causes business to out source taking American jobs away and company's relocating to other nations
There are a bunch of reasons for it and against it. Duty free treatment of Mexican goods is a problem because it encourages U.S. suppliers to take advantage of cheaper goods available in Mexico. Why is this a problem? Because there is a reason goods are cheaper in Mexico. Three of these reasons are:
1) Lack of expensive environmental regulation;
2) Cheap labor;
3) Poor workplace safety standards.
At first glance you might think "why are these problems? We get cheaper goods right?" Well that is true but ... the problem is that American manufacturers tend to fire U.S. workers and buy from Mexico because it is cheaper. In addition to that, the competition from Mexico encourages U.S. employers to lower wages and health and safety standards here.
On the plus side, we do get cheaper goods and Mexico gets much needed money. The theory is that eventually free trade will help Mexico to be more economically self-sufficient and eventually raise standards. We also benefit from the competition by becoming more efficient in our production technics and labor standards. The theory is that open competition benefits everybody. The problem is that it is not an even playing field because Mexican standards are so poor that they can compete more effectively.
I have not even brought up the Canadian side of the equation. that is a little different though because Canada is a first world country.
