What are the benefits of unemployment?

we can all see the negative impact unemployment has on the economy BUT what are the benefits of unemployment for the economy (if any)?

Answer:
It's a fairly complicated question in that there are different answers depending on what economics school you are member of. For instance, according to Marx theory, it makes workers compete for the jobs and keeps their wages lower, so the riches enjoy the benefit.

Modern western school of economics says that some natural rate of unemployment is built into the economy, i.e. is part of the economy and is non-optional. For example, so called frictional unemployment exists simply because it takes time for people to find the correct match for their skills, sometimes a geographical move is invalid etc.

So, it is not so much "benefit" as a "necessary evil". Sort of like friction in a car engine -- it is not required, it just IS.
Lots of free time.

Oh, for the *economy*!? Uh... a potential pool of cheap labor.
well, lemme see. you don't wake up early, you just watch tv. hmmm drink beer and eat chips. sleep with a bit of tipsiness.

2 sides in a coin. those unemployed's benefits would be support from welfare.

benefits on the business side is, labor becomes abundant and cheap.
