Economic/baby-boomer/fore... work question...?
It says: Topic #3: Many experts believe an influx of foreign-born workers will be an effective solution to a future labor shortage, when "baby boomers" reach the age of retirement. Either agree or disagree with this statement and explain your rationale.
What does it mean by future labor shortage, why would foreign workers affect that? And what exactly are baby-boomers? The whole question is just out of my league.
Thanks for any help!
Answer:
oooh ooooh I know this!!
Baby boomers were the children born after the war, A huge baby population, Our grand parents or great grand parents went **** crazy. My mother would be considered one. ( the hippy era) would be huge lump of the baby boomers. Economically, it was said (and I quote a book) the Pig and the python, The python being the economy and the pig being the "baby boomers" Well the python "economy" ate the pig "baby boomers" think of how large the lump is sliding down the snakes body. The economy had to adjust to the large amount of people, new hospitals had to be build new schools, more jobs more cars more houses more food more cloths more taxes more of everything... Now they are slowing down getting older preparing for retirement, And the government spent all that money... oh I could go on for days. But ok.. less cars, less houses, less jobs required more medicare needed. The economy had a hard time keeping up but now it has to slow down. (thus the pig and the python effect) NOW! We've been aware and planning this event for some time now, But it was decided.that. due to bad government and greed they will not be able to handle the shortage of tax payers to pay for these people who paid into the system nor can they afford to keep them alive an comfortable for as long as possible, SO.. one solution And I'm ashamed to mention others) is to import new tax payers at what ever cost.. I was just lost in the mix. I'm considered the X generation. And mean nothing to the pig or the python.
A very large portion of the work force will retire at the same time. These people are the "Baby Boomers" born because of the end of WWII and the awesome economic period that existed back then. This allowed people to afford more babies and thus the baby boom was born.
Foreign workers are being allowed in to take many of the high tech jobs that the retiring baby boomers will be vacating. Baby boomers make up something like 30 - 40% of the current workforce.
