What attributes did the people have that survived the last US Economic Depression?

Current economic and market troubles so close to an election seem to spell doom for many folks and for the economy in the year 2009-2010. If there is an economic depression on the horizon, what would be the best actions to take now to help belay or ameliorate the affect of a possible diminished ability/ diminished resources to survive?

Answer:
The most important thing is to be careful in what you invest. Keep debt low except for income producing items that have a good cash flow. Don't invest in things you don't understand following the herd.
Learn how to do things for yourself.
Be alert to political and economic changes and govern your actions accordingly.
No matter what you have heard or what depression you are talking about, almost everybody who did those things was all right.
My parents grew up in the Great Depression Era, their families survived because they had the WILL to survive. They came to this country from Italy to start new lives and their tight family bond, great work ethic and ability to make DUE with what you have is how they made it.

I think for us to make it through this tough economy we need to learn to live with less extravagances and rely more on self determination to make it. It isn't difficult. Look at foreigners who make it in the US.
people had no choice but to survive. they did whatever was possible to make a dollar, gain employment and eat.
They didn't listen to the News non-stop, take in sound-bites from politicians blaming the other guy constantly, hear their elected leaders incessantly go on about how rotten and terrible things were. If they needed a job and none were available, they moved. They had a work ethic and self reliance that does not exist in a huge portion of the population. We have cultivated an enormous portion of the population to nothing more than sit at home, have babies and wait for the next check. A depression on the scale of the Great One would almost be unimaginable in the big cities.
From the people I talked to I learned this.
Everybody that had a piece of land tried to grow food, raise chickens, etc. etc.
Those that were packed into a city had to compete with 15% unemployment figures.
However, if you had 'Special' skills you could barter.
Example:
A plumber fixes some broken pipes in exchange for 2 bushels of apples, which his family could can to last all winter.

My 4 year old, Auntie had her tonsils removed on the kitchen table & the doctor was paid with food products.

Nobody had cars, but busses did run in most areas.

It's "VERY" unfortunate for most Americans that lose their jobs & don't have any country folks in their families, that can grow food!
