What problem initially slowed industrial progress in the USA? (around period of Industrial Revolution)?

I think it may be the relationship between Britain and the USA, but I'm not sure... This question refers to the period in and around the Industrial Revolution.

Answer:
I thought perhaps it was the need for more infrastructure to support the high growth rate. Did we have enough roads, bridges, rail, airports, communication technology, etc. I understand India is going thru this same problem now. They have rapid growth but the infrastructure can't support continued growth and thus future growth is threatened.
