Why is it important to study first aid?
Answer:
It's important when you are referring to your friends and family (and possibly self). First aid is not for dealing with people who are lying unconcious on the street because you don't know why they are there. Drunk, Drugs, victim of crime, mentally ill, faking it to rob you. Leave those people to the professionals. If you watch someone go down you'll be able to make a more informed call to 911. If you choose to get involved know that there are risks to yourself and you aren't likely to be covered by anyone for assuming those risks which include physical injury (like being stuck with a needle, bled or vomited on by someone with an infectous disease, or physically harmed like a bank or joint injury related to the incident.. Knowing what to do will make you far more calm in the face of an emergency and that's the most important thing. A screaming group of people are no good to anyone (except the news people).
Someone mentioned that there isn't an EMT of a Doctor around when you need one I'd also like to add that if there is a doctor they are always an OB/GYN, Dermatologist, or Podiatrist who you don't want anyway.
Finally if you studied first aid you'd know that tourniquets, seizure sticks and ammonia inhalants are things of the past that belong there.
so you can save a life. For instance, a tourniquette stops blood loss.
Because it's a good thing to have if you walk past someone who is collapsed on the street and no-one knows what to do with them til the ambulance arrives.
Don't you think this question sort of answers itself?
The whole point of first aid is to help someone who is in trouble, whether they've got a paper cut, a sprained ankle, or are choking. You can't always depend on the professionals; they simply can't be everywhere at once. We have to learn how to take care of each other in times of crisis.
If you don't know the very basics of first aid, you might one day find yourself in a situation where someone you love is in danger of dying, and there just isn't enough time for the ambulence to get there.
So, study hard, huh? First aid IS actually applicable to real life (quite literally).
because there is seldom a doctor or an EMT around when you really need one.
Because at any point in time an emergency can occur. You can be just sitting there at work and your co worker drops down on the floor with a heart attack. Or just driving down the road and an accident happens in front of you.
Most emergencies happen unexpectedly and quickly. You will only have time to act quickly if you are to save a life. We should all know what to do in an emergency. Learn first aid and practice on manikins. I was able to save a seven year old boy from bleeding to death sortly after recieving my red cross certificate of completion. Applying pressure to the wound would not work, a tourniquet was out of the question. My Red Cross training saved this boys life.
It's not really, unless you spend time away from civilization. Also, unless someone regularly uses first aid skills regularly, most first aid training is useless and/or forgotten in a time of crisis. Also, there are very few situations in which minor training will be useful. The most used technique is "put pressure on the bleeding wound." You can remember that, can't you? There. You are trained. Your most important piece of first aid equipment is the phone-- call 911. Oh, sorry, CPR training is also useful. You actually might want to get that training.
