Should other countries force trade regulations on a country that does want to trade?

Chinese history goes back a long way. The Chinese are the inventors of the wheelbarrow, woodblock printing, fireworks, silk and porcelain - objects that have touched our lives even today. Their influence reaches beyond time and space. Not only have the Chinese be conquered throughout their history, but also they've had a lot of fighting with internal tribes.  We, however, are going to concentrate on their relationship with Western Europe around 1750 and the 1800's.
1750: In the Ch'ing Dynasty, western nations tried desperately to open up trade with China. But they were only successful in a limited way. The Chinese were more than willing to export their items like spices, silk and porcelain, but not as willing to import objects and ideas from the West. This created an imbalance in the trade between the western countries and China. This angered the United States and the British most of all.
