What is the core religion in the US?

I wanted to see if there's a correlation that suggests a country's economy improves or worsens if such country has a core religion. Core religion has numerous meanings. I would like different opinions across the diversified web-users. The degree/corresponding relationship is NOT being evaluated in this question - just answer straight from your experiences and gut-feelings.
Important: QUESTION'S INTENDED FOR US RESIDENTS ONLY!

The Freedom FROM religion.
Christian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/religion_in...
we don't really have a core religion that's why we don't get in holy wars with each other, we have freedom of religion, I'm sure a population of one religious group may be bigger than another which I'm sure is what you mean, but it doesn't make them or me if it's my religion the core religion.

I think religon brought the country together in the early years.. but as of today, there are so many different religons, and more people who belive in no religion,,, that it no longer plays a part in the success of this country..

the countrys success is driven by scientists and entrpenuers that stop at nothing to make thier dreams come true.

Of course the government supplys all the money needed to do just that..
Capitalism.
When the Pilgrims came to America, they were looking to practice their religion w/out the Church of England's interference. They simply wanted to worship God and not be told how they can or can't worship. It used to be called Puritainism. Now they are several branches of this out-dated religion, like Baptist and Methodist.
What a great question. My response as a 50+ advisor for college transfer students at a community college is strictly from personal experience. I have a batchelor's degree in ENG lit and Political Sci and an MAEd. I was not raised in a specific religious tradition, but I have converted to Roman Catholicism as an adult.

To me, the US is a Protestant country in its main values. Individualism, economic prosperity, the work ethic that most US workers embody comes from that belief tradition. I don't deny that many religious sects and belief systems from around the world are represented in the US. However, our need as a society to be free from many forms of authority; to have our own opinions and to determine our own way is very much a Protestant value.
