Is it possible to tig weld mildsteel chain using co2 gass if so whats the secret?
Answer:
TIG satands for TUNGSTEN Inert Gas. CO2 is not an inert gas therefor the benefits of the shielding would not be there.
In fact this welding of chain would prove dangerous as there would be random and unpredictable fluctuations in tensile strength of the welds due to the various oxides generated by this process
I have never heard of tigging with co2. Usually one would use argon or helium. It might be possible but I would think that co2 would not be a good shield gas. Tigging the mild steel chain is not a problem get some argon.
probably a bad idea cos carbon dioxide would be oxidising to many elements in the weld bead. Thus you would get loss of strength and corrosion resistance.Use argonarc or somesuch inert gas shielding.
You can MIG weld mild steel with CO2, although it produces more spatter than an Argon/CO2 mix (Argoshield or similar). But for TIG, you need the correct gas mix, or pure Argon.
