What are...?

batteries made of?

Answer:
Batteries work on principal of energy conversion from one form to another. From long time lead acid batteries are used for small standby purpose. They work on electrolysis & ionisation.Batteries contain positive & negative plates inside connected in series to form one positive & one negative electrode separated by poruos susbstance.Electrolyte of specified gravity serves source of ions. Now a days sealed & maintenance free batteries are used.Batteries require charger having incoming supply alternating & outgoing unidirectional.Batteries are used in UPS,Solar power storage,telecommunication,sign... Electrical susbstation auxilliary supply & so on.They are important eg wind energy generators excitation supply can be providd by batteries first before it starts generating.Trip & close supply of circuit breaker of susbstation, emergency lighting & so on.Batteries are having limitations of life cycle.Thier capacity is specified by giving amperes for hours like 20 amp for 1 hr will be 20AH.
Anything capable of storing an electric charge can be a battery.

In the case of standard commercially available batteries, they are ionized chemical compounds.
a regular alkaline battery has zinc and manganese dioxide in it.
