In the chain survey field book, readings are entered from bottom to top and not from top to bottom. Why?
Answer:
In a "field book," as opposed to a "level book," the left page is for numerical data and the right page is for showing topographic details (streets, buildings, trees, etc.). Field books are used for route surveys; that is, projects that are long relative to their width (roadways, pipelines, etc.)
The red line in the center of the right hand page is the alignment. Details to the left of the red line are on the left of the alignment, and vice-versa. The details should be plotted as station and offset (left or right) to scale.
Data are entered and details are shown from bottom to top because that is what will be seen as one progresses along the alignment. That is, as you walk along the alignment, the right hand page is a 2-D map of the project.
