Compound reacting with water to liberate gases?

hi.. i'm looking for a compound which can be applied on surface of walls of a channel and which reacts with water to liberate gases(any gas)..Its for an expt where we trap these gas bubbles in crevices present in the channel for further work...limestone would liberate CO2.. any other suggestions?

any paired dry acid and base, for example, alka-seltzer is powdered citric acid and sodium bicarbonate.
