What is genetic engineering?

Decribe some examples of genetic enigeering, such as vitimin A and carrots, human insulin, improving crops.
explain the advantage and disadvantages of genetic engineering?

Answer:
I'm generally against doing someones homework, especially if its under false pretense which i think this is

Genetic Engineering, boiled down, is intentionally altering the DNA of a given organism to intentionally derive a desired result. Much like artificial selection.
The examples you've given; i'm not sure about the carrots, i'm not a diabetic, but i know that at one point cow insulin was used instead of humans, but through genetic engineering, we harvest and use real human insulin, improving conditions greatly, we create hardier crops which can withstand more extreme weather conditions.

Pros; The possibilities are endless as to what is can be done
Cons; Playing God, unforseen consequences, mutations with far reaching impact
im not sure much about the overall study of gentic engineering, but for that growing/ improving crops, what happens is they alter the genetics of the plant to make them immune to the harmful insects that feed off them. without insects to harm the plants, the fruits and such can grow larger then "normal" but their genetics are still different ...look it up if you get intrested

...sorry cant get into detail, not a expert in the field...
the answers given are just fine. Simply stated genetic engineering is altering the gene structure of anything. This is not permitted in our species but is being done on other animal and vegetable species which we consume. Now, the million dollar question is whether those altered genes that are ingested are ultimately going to interfere with our own.in the long run. This is a fear.
