to have standards between all people...
thats what nasa said before their probes crashed on mars wasting millions of tax dollars
everything thing in this world (matter) is limited and shows it's influence in one way or the other. so to optimize its use and to control the parameters we need to measure.
Measurement is done with the help of a pre-calibrated standard.
Because sometimes you can't get information in any other way or that other way might not be as accurate or simple.
for example :
if you wanted to know how much do you weigh how would you calculate it ?
You could try and calculate it by taking the density and amount in volume of each of the materials in your body and add them together - although I don't know how you can get all this information without measuring anything , or you can get on a simple scale and find out with a simple operation.
Measurement is important for many reasons, but the main reason is that you want to know how much you have of something. And having a system of units (or a measurement system) is also important, because that way you can be sure that everyone is measuring the same amount, at the same time, no matter where you are.

For example, if I were to sell you milk, you'd want to know how much you're paying for. If I told you I sold milk in small, medium and large containers, you'd probably want to know how much larger is the large container than the medium container. And if someone else were to sell you milk, you'd want to be sure that his small is the same as my small, his medium the same as my medium and his large the same as my large.

I'm not sure I made myself clear, but I hope it helps!
