Civil Engineer Or Architect?
Answer:
Double major or choose the one you like the best and major in that, with a minor in the other. By doing so you will almost guarantee you will be doing something you love with a nice paycheck. The coursework for the two is different, so you will more than likely not get a job as an architect with a civil engineering degree. Your chances of getting a civil engineering job with an architecture degree are a little better, but still not good.
There are degrees in architectural engineering; I know the University of Cincinnati offers them. This discipline is skewed more toward the architectural field than civil engineering.
I graduated with a degree in civil and environmental engineering, however i currently design land development projects. Civil engineering is a broad career path and you can do anything from structural, environmental, traffic, geotechnical, hydraulic, site design or many other things with your degree.
An Architect is a person who don't have enough balls to become an engineer
or is not gay enough to become an interior decorator
yes you can.but if you dont want to waste your time taking architecture classes, you could just enroll on autocad classes after finishing your degree on civil engineering.Being a civil engineer is a great job and has a lot of options of things you can do..Dont worry as a civil engineer you would also be making drawings using autocad for your design.Remember Civil Engineers can be Architects and Architects can not be Civil Engineers.
Maybe you could go into structural engineering, which I believe is a branch of Civil.
I was in the same quandary years ago but now that I am a professional CE i have no regrets. it is better to be a CE because if you are a CE and you are artistic as well, then you can definitely do the job of an architect. On the other hand, architects cannot do the job of a CE because of its diversity. But of course we CE's would not really want to encroach on the architects' profession for ethical reasons.
if u do both in same time, then u would become a "jack of all trades and a master of none"
A monkey can do the job of an architect. Or that's what I like to tell my friend that's an architect.
It will be very hard for you to do both at the same time since the majority of their classes don't cross over to each other.
You can get your Bachelors in Civil Engineering then get your Masters in Architecture. Then you can decide after you get out of school which one you really like.
A word of warning though. Civil Engineers and Architects don't get paid a whole hell of a lot unless you are a business owner or have worked in the industry for 15 years or more and worked your way up to the top.
Yes, you will make a comfortable salary but I have friends that have graduated with me 8 years ago but they are making almost twice as much as I do now. And they had degrees in Accounting, Industrial Engineering and English.
