So you don't end up fighting "Buss Off" errors because some one was stupid enough to put together a bad copy of a token ring network.

To answer your question, each PLC has a real limit of the size of what it can control. So you have multiple PLC's for large systems. Now, it would be nice to have them communicate together, especially if they are of different manufacturer.
Well... if you wanted to remotely control a PLC from a computer over Ethernet you would need Ethernet support on that PLC.
