Why si new zealand called new zealand was there an old one ? lol?

Answer:
The name New Zealand originated with Dutch cartographers, who called the islands Nova Zeelandia, after the Dutch province of Zeeland. British explorer James Cook subsequently anglicised the name to New Zealand. Also, if you did not know, there is an island of Denmark called Zealand, and you really can't have the same name for two different places :)
Zealand is an alternative spelling for "Zeeland" which is part of the Netherlands. Abel Tasman, a Dutchman, gave New Zealand its name.
