Smooth curve give you the advantage to predict frequency of other even you not modeled but still use same model.
If you have data of wave height from 1 meter and 2 meter and 3 meter. You can predict the frequency of wave with height 1,5 meter etc.
The advantage of straight line segment is easy to read.
