hand powered AC/DC generator. just need a hand crank, some strong magnets and coils and feraday's law will do the rest. making a rectifier and voltage regulator for it is pretty easy too. i mean hell, i'm a mechanical engineer and i figured it out no problem!
i set up mine to charge my cellphone. it was pretty tight..
build a hovercraft that runs off of batteries
Why not something simple like a digital alarm clock. Or a stop light?
One that I haven't seen a lot, but I think it is pretty cool:
Robot that can climb a wall and clean a window (or at least) sweep thru the entire window area as if it was cleaning.
Not only cool, but also real apps can be expected out of it.
