How do I use technical drawing to make more flexible sketches?
Answer:
I'd suggest that you purchase a good book on technical drawing. Good technical drawings for complex parts can be very involved and require some thought to layout very well.
You will find that section views, detail views, and projection views are all very useful in adding information. Section views allow you to cut through an object as though it were sliced. It can be useful to "look inside" of an object at details that would be difficult to understand using hidden lines.
Detail views allow you to "magnify" complex but small features of a part for better illustration of the features. These are scaled differently than the other views and are focused on a small portion of a primary view.
Projection views allow you to project a view from a surface of the object that is not easily understood from one of the primary views. These are not as widely used, but do come in handy for items with faces or features at odd angles to a primary view.
You can also use these in conjuction with one another. Again, if your drawing skills are bad, a good guidebook and some practice will help. Also, modern 3D CAD software can be very user friendly and helpful. If you aren't much of an artist with paper and pencil, this can be a great help.
