How much water do I need to remove from the air to get my basement humidity level from 72% to 55%?

I have a basement humidity level of 72%. I am trying to get it down to 55%. My basement is roughly 450 sqft. How much water do I need to extract from the air to achieve this lower humidity level?

Answer:
The answer is somehwere around 1/2 lb of water (or 1/2 pint).

This has to do with a couple of things. First, relative humidity is a function of temperature - it's the percentage of water that's in the air compared to how much water the air "could" hold.

Warmer air can hold more water - so, if you have 60 degree air, at 55% RH, and you just heat it up to a little over 70 degrees (F), the RH will be below 70. Same amount of water, just the relative humidity is lower because warmer air holds more water.

Second, it has to do with your basement. If you remove enough water, don't forget that more water will start coming in through the concrete. I have a dehumidifier in my basement that gets emptied every week - but the total amount of water in the air is only about 1 pound at any one time.

So there's really not an answer. If your basement has a tile floor, and painted walls, you'll have to remove less. If you have sealed walls or a vapor barrier, and you heat it a little, that's even less water in the air. If the foundation leaks, and it's cool, you may never get dried out.

17%. There is no way of knowing how much that is.
why is the humidity level so high in your basement? you could take a hundred gallons out of the air and still have 72% humidity because of moisture in the replacement air.
