science and need for a new idea
The "foot" as we know it most likely originated as the length of a man's foot. It eventually was standardized and divided into inches. Eventually people needed a more convenient way to measure bigger things. Alvin J. Fellows patented the first spring type tape measure in 1868.
Well when you come to think of it, all they needed to do was draw two marks marking a length, and then use this as a repeat patten on something else
Well before the metric system we had imperial measurements like inches and that was decided to be the length of three grain seeds laid end to end .
so i guess it got a bit laborious lining up hundreds of them to measure say a plank of wood so some bright spark said lets make it a unit of measurement in stead. on a piece of string and then it became a strip of cloth iie a tape measure.
