What is the exact equivalanet of R-11 as brine in low temp. refrigeration systems ?

Answer:
*Most new low-pressure centrifugal chillers are designed for use with Forane® 123. Most of the basic properties of Forane® 123 are close to those for R-11, including boiling point and vapor pressure, indicating that new Forane® 123 chillers should provide operating conditions and performance close to what has been seen with R-11 equipment. However, new equipment must take into consideration the differences in properties to optimize the performance of Forane® 123.

New chillers using Forane® 123 generally use the same lubricants as those for R-11. If installation procedures or service conditions call for addition of lubricant or replacement of components, please consult the equipment manufacturer for specific recommendations.

*When retrofitting R-11 chillers with Forane® 123, the differences in properties require that changes be made to controls, components, and/or the impeller drive train in order to minimize performance losses. Testing has shown reduced capacity and efficiency where the only modification was changing the refrigerant from R-11 to R-123. To obtain the maximum performance from Forane® 123, original equipment manufacturers offer recommendations, and in some cases, retrofit kits.

Forane® 123 is chemically compatible and miscible with the same lubricants used in R-11 equipment. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the choice of lubricants or procedure for oil changes during retrofit.

Forane® 123 is chemically stable in contact with common materials of construction. However, the refrigerant may affect the size, shape, or mechanical properties of plastics or elastomers present in R-11 chillers. Check each system carefully for any materials that will not be acceptable when Forane® 123 is introduced into the chiller. Obtain suitable replacement parts from the equipment manufacturer.

There is not an exact "drop in" replacement for R-11. R-11 has an interim replacement refrigerant of R-123. However, a complete retrofit is needed when retorfitting a R-11 system to an R-123 system.
