Why did they change the term "FT- LBS to LB-FT of TORQUE ?
Answer:
In SI, it is Joules or Newton-meters (Force * distance) so LB-FT to keep the same notation
People were getting confused between torque and energy or work.
They are not the same type of force but people would plug the numbers into the wrong equations.
Changing the way the units were written was an attempt to make that less likely.
Toruque is a force measurement.
To measure torque as work you need to count the number of degress or the perimeter distance it is applied through. To convert it to power then you need to count the time it is applied through that distance for. you will notice that when the tell you the power of a truck engine the give you torque and the revolutions per minute or the horsepower rating.
Foot pounds is already the units for work and only the time needs to be measured to make it into a power measurement.
foot pounds per second is horsepower
