You might try finding out what your instructor did his research on in Grad school, and do something in that area. Most people enjoy reading about things that they are familiar with.
If you're looking to go in blind, here are some ideas:
-- Avoided cost (gas) vs. equipment cost for regenerative braking on a car
-- Fuel economy as a function of tire pressure
-- Sound dampening effect of various barrier materials

im not a mechanical eng. but i thought u may have a research on car doors which can be opened using a remote control.i dont know but i think it is a new idea
