Freons were selected as refrigerants for thermodynamic reasons (pressure and temperature, etc.) but also because they are highly stable chemically. The shelf life of R-22 would depend on storage considerations and possibly any oils mixed with the freon.

*As far as self life is concerned , keep it under controlled temperature and filling/unloading valve is to be keep blinded.
Over a period of time o rings may get deteriorated,so it is wise to enclosed the ports of valve.
