i'm essentially making a half-ton arbor press. i'm looking for some way to prevent the handle from just spinning and dropping the ram when its not being held onto. my first inclination is to press in a delrin bushing or something, but i'm looking for other ideas. any suggestions?
Answer:
Assuming you've got a bit of friction on the "ram", it's likely that you'll be OK by just adding a sufficient amount of weight to the end of your "handle" (or one of the ends if it's got 2 or 3 legs) to create a sufficiently unbalanced load such that the leg or your handle to remains pointed down, and that the weight of the arbor won't be able to rotate your handle.
Pressing in a Delrin bushing to create friction through an interference fit doesn't really seem a good idea for long-term wear results.
