My photocopy paper is 80 GSM. How can I test if it really is 80 GSM?
Answer:
16 sheets are ever so slightly less than 1 square metre. count out 16 sheets and weigh them on a set of kitchen scales and they should weigh 79.8g if they are 80gsm
weigh is as 80gsm = 80grams
The paper manufacturers weight a mass load and then divide by square metres and the number of sheets. You'd need an accurate scale and a really really large amount of paper!
80 GSM isn't really very good paper, so I'm sure it doesn't matter too much if you're getting ripped off!
If your un sure send the full pack to me I will test every sheet through my printer for you.Thanks.
80 gsm = 80 grams per square metre.
Work out how many sheets make up one square metre (length x width of sheets paper) - you may need to cut one sheet depending on paper size. Then weigh your sheets - should come to 80 g.
I agree with mant, measure a square metre of the stuff and weigh it. You could find 1/4 of a square metre (20g) or 4 square metres (320g) You could do this many times but once should be enough
80gsm means that 1m2 will weigh 80gms (Grams per Square Metre). A0 is 1m2 and is the size of 16 sheets of A4. So, to check, you need to get 16 sheets and weigh it - that will give you the gsm
I agree with the others, but in practical terms, getting a easily measurable quantity without any real hassle I would do it this way.
I will guess that you have a pack of 500 sheets of A4
A4 is 297mm by 210mm
which is 62370 sqmm
there are 1000*1000 square millimetres in a square meter
so each sheet is 0.06237 sqaure meters
you have 500 sheets
so 500 *0.06237 sqaure meters = 31.185 square meters
at 80 grams per square meter
you 500 sheets should weigh
their area*80grams
80*31.185 =2494.8 grams
basically 2.5 kilograms
The nominal weight of an A4 sheet of 80gsm paper is exactly 5g. So a new pack of 500 sheets should weigh 2.5kg plus the weight of the packaging – say 2.52kg total. Allowing for 5% production tolerance, any weight between 2.4kg and 2.6kg is acceptable. If you use domestic scales to check the weight, don't forget that they may be less accurate than the production process.
cut out a piece that is 1 square meter and weigh it it should be 80 gramme seems to obvious !!!
