Voltage Homework?

I'm reeaaly confused about Voltage. First I learned that it is electric potential, the energy in the electron measured in volts. Now voltage is "voltage drop", the difference between electric potential before and after passing through a resistor.

A good way to picture what voltage, current, etc really mean is to compare them with water terms....

Voltage (or potential, which means exactly the same thing when talking about electricity) is like water pressure.

Current is like water flow.

Electrical resistance is like anything that restricts water flow (like the sides of a small hose, or a filter in a water line).

With water, the greater the pressure difference between one end of a hose and the other, the greater the flow.

Similarly, with electricity, the greater the voltage (in a given conductor or wire), the greater the current.

think about the words:- "potential" the potential to do something ACROSS a surface...so this is the voltage drop...think of it this way...is there such thing as altitude? No; someone just decided that sea level was zero, and we do relative altitude from there on. So every time we say "an altitude of 1000 feet" we mean a 1000 feet DROP down to sea.

So both answers are right.
Voltage is the amount of potential difference between two points that can be used to cause current flow.

A voltage drop is a different word in itself. A voltage drop is the voltaged developed across a component, such as a resistor, as a result of the current flowing through it. Hope this helps. You can also do a google search to get more information about this
I think u need to understand V=IR, P=VI, E=Pt all these are different.

Voltage is just another quantity to to relate current and resistance. (eg 2 parallel plates, one with 100 electrons removed so it is negatively charged, so it has a voltage of 100V (assume). These plates allow 100 electrons to move from one to another.

V=IR (Basic law)
Power is VI (rate of doing things---eg moving electrons ). Energy is how much power u supply to (eg resistor) over time.
Voltage and voltage drop, electrical potential are all essentially the same thing. Don't let the terminology distract you. ---- A voltage across a resistor is a voltage and it is a voltage drop and it is an electrical potential.

For example if you connect a 12 volt battery to two 100 ohm resistors in series, then there will be 6 volts across each resistor or the voltage drop across each resistor is 6 volts. If you measure the voltage across each resistor you will measure 6 volts in each case. Hope this helps to clarify.
