I need an electronic way to release air from a tank ... what type of valve should I use?
Answer:
Try Solenoid Valves if it works
Lol.. ALMOST like that eh? More like that's exactly what you're doing. :D No matter.
You're looking for an air solenoid valve. McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) carries some, as well as MSC (www.mscdirect.com). These are for industrial service, so you may end up paying a bit for them.
Otherwise you can Froogle "solenoid valve" and see what you come up with.
You'll need two things:
1. a solenoid
2. an RC timing circuit on a relay or a timer (e.g. agstat relay)
your "trigger" will activate the solenoid, but if you need a short "burst" instead of a long blast, then you'll need to limit the amount of time the solenoid stays open. If you look up "RC timing circuit" online, or go to your basic electronic's book, you'll see that putting a resistor and capacitor of the correct values into an RC timing circuit configuration will allow you to press the trigger and have the switch "shut off" based on the timing circuit. The relay provides contacts that will close (when you pull the trigger) and open (when the timer says "enough") , giving you the short burst you're looking for.
