Can someone help me with building an alternative vehicle for school project?

My school is doing this project in which the pupils have to build a vehicle where there would be a category of how fast it goes, how high, how far and so on.

The vehicle that the teachers are going to choose can be any type of structure; rocket, hovercraft, car and etc.

I need help on what kind of equipment I should use as the school would provide all the necessary items to build it from scratch.

Furthermore, i need details on what kind of energy source i should use. The vehicle should be easy to build and the max time allowed is 2-3 hours. Websites on this subject would be helpful.

Thank you.

Answer:
What about a chemical propulsion? Either a rocket or a car with a rocket type propulsion. It really depends on what you'd be allowed to use as a propellent though. Maybe a plastic coke bottle fitted with a cork with a small nozzle anchored onto some wheels. You could fill it with liquid nitrogen, or use other sources of high pressure gas. Maybe a simple acid base reaction, anything that produces gas at a high rate. Dump it in, pop the nozzle on and let it go.
This is a very open ended competition. You only have 2-3 hours for construction though. Therefore, I'd check out the 'course', and then choose your vehicle. I'm thinking a really basic but powerful model rocket would be best, and there are a ton of websites out there dealing with the subject. Good luck, and have fun.
