What are the work feilds that the biomedical engineer work in ?

Answer:
As a relatively new discipline, much of the work in biomedical engineering consists of research and development, covering an array of fields: bioinformatics, medical imaging, image processing, physiological signal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials and bioengineering, systems analysis, 3-D modeling, etc.

In addition to the answers above, there are also opportunities outside of design and development.

With computers playing a big part in medical systems, there are plenty of opportunities in software and systems validation. This involves studying system requirements, writing test cases based on those requirements, overseeing or performing testing and documenting the results. This is also a good way to learn about the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulations regarding medical devices.

There are also opportunities in quality assurance engineering. My experience as a QA Engineer invoved reviewing the results of software validations, investigating customer complaints, performing trending analyses of customer complaints, participation in design reviews, writing of product inspection protocols and inspection of product in our warehouses. This was also a valuable learning experience in terms of qualtiy systems and FDA regulations. Regardless of your biomedical engineering path, you will have to, at some point, interface with qualtiy assurance and have some familiarity with the FDA.

The engineering discipline, in and of itself, offers plenty of opportunities: insurance investigators, patent attorneys, design/development, QA. As far as biomedical, the fields include chemical, mechanical, electronic and software. This includes devices such as syringes, blood glucose monitors, cochlear implants, imaging systems, thermometers.

I know this is a broad answer, but I hope it gives some insight into just how many fields are available in biomedical engineering.
