What advantage is realize by use of a short wavelength light beam (Green versus Red)?

Compact disc recording media uses laser to read back the information that they contain, what advantage is realize by use of a short wavelength light beam (Green versus Red).

Answer:
That would only work if the light frequency is used as the carrier. It is not. Regardless of using a red or green laser you would still get 1 bit per pulse and the amount of data transfered is dependant on the speed of laser modulation and not on the wavelength of the laser.

I would assume that a shorter wavelength would actually mean a higher density of information on the storage medium and not necessarily higher transfer rates.

Edit:.. Bah.. InPhase E beat me to it.
Short wavelength means the wave will have a higher frequency. A higher frequency wave can carry more information on it than a wave with a lower frequency.
Just to clarify the answer given above. A higher frequency wave can carry more information because it transfers information at a higher rate. So it's carrying more information per unit time.
That is, a shorter wavelength (higher frequency) will carry more data in 1 second than a longer wavelength will.
A shorter wavelength means smaller. Smaller means more data can be stored in a given area.
The wavelength of green light is shorter compared to that of red light. Because of this, more information can be etched into a smaller area. This is the same reason Blu-Ray discs hold about twice as much as a conventional DVD.
