What do Civil/Transportation Engineers wear to work [dress code]?

I have an internship with the Texas Department of Transportation but I'm not sure how I will need to dress.

I thought that jeans and a button down or polo shirt is acceptable, but now I'm thinking I may need slacks..

Answer:
If you are working in a DOT main office, the most common dress will most likely be casual dress pants and a shirt with a collar. Although students are usually cut quite a bit of slack and you may be able to get away with jeans. Maybe wear some nicer pants the first day and check things out. If you wear a tie and or a blazer or a suit, you will probably stick out as someone who is there on their first day.

If you are working in a small region/district office or a field office, jeans and a polo shirt will probably be the norm.

I hope that you enjoy your internship, I have been happily employed as a Civil/Transportation Engineer at two different state DOTs in the office and in the field for 16 years now. It has been a pretty fun job most of that time.
Sport coat, white shirt, and tie. Look businesslike.
Firm handshake. Introduce yourself.
Business casual. Nice pant (not jeans, sweat pants, shorts) and nice polo or button down.
DOT's are usually more casual, and you will probably see people there wearing jeans. However, if you want to make a good impression, I suggest going with dressy casual. The button or polo shirt is okay. Dockers are okay for pants. You can wear casual shoes but do not wear sneakers. Wear the jeans only if you are going to be doing field work.
