What causes ice build up on the coils of a window airconditoner?

Answer:
Temp set too low in relation to relative humidity outside and/or too low refridgerant level.
You have the temp set too low. Turn the unit off completely until all the ice on the coils melts. The you can turn it back on, but at a higher setting.
I really don't know but I can google -- Why Window Air Conditioners Ice up by Donald GrummettIf the air conditioner is too large for the room size icing up can result. If oversized the air ... This will allow ice to build up onto the cooling coil. ...

Have you checked your filter on the air conditioner? Most window units have filters that come out and all you do is clean it with water, then dry and put it back in.If this doesn't help most likely you need freon. You will have to call an expert to have this done.
Usually it's because the unit is low on freon (the refrigerant) That may seem odd. A reasonable person might suppose that LESS freon would make it less likely to freeze.

The reason that this happens is a little complicated. Normally, the pressure of the liquid freon is dropped just before it enters the evaporation coil. The lower the pressure, the lower the boiling temperature of the refrigerant. When you lose freon the remaining freon gets extremely cold as it enters the evaporation coil. The unit doesn't cool as well because there is less freon, but that one little spot is extremely cold and moisture from the air starts freezing to the coil at that point. As ice builds up, air flow is blocked so the cold spot moves further down the coil and ice begins forming there. Eventually, almost all of the coil will be covered with ice.
High air humidity and thermostat set too low.
