Job opportunities for a M.S degree in biomedical engineering?
are there great prospect for biomedical engineers (hospitals, biotech companies, etc..) in New York City, and is the pay decent.
Answer:
The job prospect are horrible if you cannot classify yourself to companies. There are few position specifically mentioning Biomedical Engineering-degree as a requirement and generally you have to apply to other positions where your Biomedical Engineering training is relevant. For example if you lean towards tissues engineering apply for a position like cell biology research associate (like a Biochemist would do). If you are more towards programming medical devices apply for a Software Engineering job (like a Computer Engineer would.) On top of this expect great competition. There are few entry level positions in Biomedical Engineering (some companies only hire experience candidates while other companies fill their entry level needs by hiring interns.) This is true for all engineering fields but even more true in Biomedical Engineering since there are fewer jobs on average and lots of people are getting Biomedical Engineering degrees. The reports about Biomedical Engineering being hot is partially a lie and are evidently being cooked up by people who majored in Philosophy in college with no work experience directly in Biomedical Engineering. Yes, healthcare jobs like nursing are in high demand due to the aging population but the need for Biomedical Engineers will not necessarily increase likewise since there people need service of professionals (e.g medical exams, nurses' care and surgery) and less of Biomedical Engineer interaction per se. When they do need Biomedical Engineering products (e.g EKG machines and artificial hips) they can also get it from Electrical Engineers, Pharmacy-researchers, Mechanical Engineers and the like and mostly get it from the latter because they traditionally make them. Finally, the best place for Biomedical Engineers jobs is California.
