How do you convert square yard to tons of asphalt?

Answer:
You need to contact the asphalt supplier and get the density of their mixture (this number can vary because of the rock or other filler materials added - usually in tons per (cubic)yard or tons per truckload - and how many cubic yards the truck carries). Then assume a thickness for the pour (my experience has been somewhere between 1/4 yard to 1/15 yard) and multiply by 4 to 15 to convert cubic yards to square yards covered.

To make it easier, you can ask the asphalt supplier for the square yard coverage numbers of their mixture choices.
