I read an article that said Wal-Mart embeds RFID chips into its clothing to track peoples whereabouts, and?
that these RFID tags are also used in Emergency Rooms. Has anyone else read similar articles on the Internet or elsewhere, and if so, is this true?
Answer:
RFID is extensively used by Walmart to track inventory. Scanning can range from fractions of an inch to several feet depending on the RFID transmitter and receiver. Most need to be in very close proximity, figure several inches. RFID is generally not cheap so it is often used to track boxes of items and not necessarily individual items.
There are concerns about RFID being used to track consumer's spending habits. However, UPC codes combined with customer "cards" (common to Kroger's and other chain stores) are already used to track spending habits. Heck if you use a credit card or debit card, companies are tracking your spending habits.
If you want to find articles on RFID they are all over the Internet. Too many to mention and it depends if you want technical advice or conspiracy theories. I just read an article today that a company plans to attach VERY small RFID tags to DVD or audio CD's to prevent theft. The consumer would be required to activate the DVD or CD at the check-out or it won't work. Of course it sounds interesting, but isn't just that simple or easy.
I'm a business major with accounting & finance concentrations... in most of my classes, we discussed RFID more than once. Apparently it's becoming more and more popular in the business world. It's used for internal controls... Good for knowing where's and what happen to inventory.
There are anti theft devices attached to many retail products, but the range of small RFID devises makes them impractical for tracking people beyond a few inches. Ever set a pet scaned for an RFID chip? the scanner is nearly touching the animal.
An RFID device in the ID bracelet used in hospitals makes sense, though a bar code would be cheaper.

Well, we definitely don't in our ER! We tend not to care where our patients go, as long as they go home.
I wondered how they knew where I was! :o
