You can do just about anything involving chemicals. You have to take so much chemistry and so much math and so much engineering that having a chemical engineering degree opens up a lot of doors and you can do a lot of things from research to sales. I graduated in 1988 w/ BS ChemE. The text books will tell you that you take what a chemist does in a set of beakers and design a plant that will do the same (only in larger volumes). I think that's the exception rather than the rule.

It is one of the most challenging fields next to EE. Best jobs are in pharmaceutical or biotech industry, and the less glamorous jobs are in refineries and chemical mills. If you have the aptitude for this career it is a very rewarding field with a lot of career flexibility. You can run chemical reactors, refineries, develop drugs or drug processes. Most work will be in scale-up engineering work. This is taking products from laboratory to commercialization.
