What are the disadvantages of installing power factor correction capacitor banks in Mv,Lv electrical networks
Answer:
Most of the problems mentioned are related to harmonic currents drawn by nonlinear loads such as variable speed drives. Harmonic loads cause the total power factor to be lower, but capacitors can only compensate for the displacement part of the total power factor they can not reduce the distortion factor unless they are installed as part of a harmonic filter. If you are having a hamonic problem you probably need to do a harmonic study and determine what remedy might be appropriate.
1. Cost
2. Space
3. Should be properly balanced, otherwise it will make problems on the system itself.
