A 15HP motor at 600 feet from the MCC has a variable speed drive. Test 3 hookups - #12 wire, #8 wire with no line filter, #8 wire with a line filter. Compare the harmonic voltage spikes at the motor for the 3 scenarios. Industry practice is to increase the wire size from #12 to #8 and install a line filter. I think it would be just as good to use #12 ot #10 wire with no line filter.
