How are college dorms air conditioned?

Answer:
I believe they use freshmen to turn 100 foot fans in the basement. Work study sucks :P

(my sisters dorm only had heat, no ac)
most aren't! i lived in a relatively new dorm last year at UW-madison, and you could only have air conditioning if you had a medical condition (ie: allergies). the air conditioner was just one of those ones you stick in your window.
otherwise, you're stuck with the heat or using a fan!!
They aren't. 14 grand a semester wont get you air, and whatever dorm you wind up in will probably have a policy against window units.
As pointed out by the first answerer, most college dorms do not have central air conditioning. Some have policies that allow window air conditioners for those with medical needs or who are willing to pay a fee to offset the electrical cost.

In the cases where the buildings are fully air conditioned with central equipment, mechanical A/C equipment sized for the building is used. To learn about this equipment, try an internet seach on "central air conditioning." You will find lots of information, with pictures and diagrams.
With cold beer.
