Do you know anything about electronics?
Do you know anything about programming?
Do you even know different types of Electronic devices?
You couldnt just create a robot by finding how does it work.
You should start by learning everything you can about math, physics, electronics, computer programing and mechanical engineering. There's a magazine called Servo that would be a good way to get your feet wet while you study. While many of the articles would likely be over your head they are responsive to robotics enthusiasts of all skill levels and there are articles for beginners as well. This magazines advertising is a great way to find out whats available in the way of kits, parts and sub assemblies. A robotic kit would be a good way to learn. They also list robotics clubs and competitions monthly. See if you can find (or start) a local robotics club in your area. Go to a competition if you can and ask questions. The clubs and enthusiasts I know about are happy to share their knowledge. Above all don't be discouraged. Building robot is a daunting task, even for the phd's at MIT. After all, if it was easy we'd all have a C3-P0 in our basement.
If you want to know how to build robot, you have to know this first:
1)programming/embedded system
2)electronic circuits
3)automatic control/signal
4)mechanical motion/dynamics
5)machining parts
If you have knowledge all about above aspects, you should be okay to start your own project on robot.
